“I would bike 500 miles, and I would bike 500 more”. And so it is! On our 32 mile leg from Rockford to Harvard, we passed the 1,000 mile mark. Of course, 1,600km sounds better but it’s still an achievement for us oldies. It was fitting that we were cycling the Long Prairie Trail at the time, still part of the Grand Illinois Trail, destination Chicago.
Now that camping is over, we are becoming increasingly discerning regarding hotel choices. Yet the last two stops have been primes examples of ” never judge a book by its cover” and “price is not a guarantee”. In Rockford, we stayed at Cliffhangers, nestled along the Rock River. Superb, luxury room, indoor pool, cooked breakfast and printing facilities (which we needed). Check it out at $78 per night including tax. Compare that to the exclusively named Heritage Inn & Suites in Harvard. $85, rules, rules and more rules. Dodgy plumbing, inadequate toiletries and basic ‘breakfast’. Bizarre!
