We have finally made it onto the Great River Trail and one of the myriad of recreational paths that make up the Grand Illinois Trail (GIT). It was a warm, sunny morning as we left our motel by the Quad Cities airport. Ambling through quiet residential areas of Moline , the Rock River was left behind, then we swooped down to the Mississippi at East Moline.
The trail by the mighty river is well signed, easily found and paved. It was only a 16 mile ride for us today as we are now camping at Illiwek CG just outside quirky Hampton. “Artsy-Fartsy People Live Here”, a sign planted in an eccentric garden exclaimed!
The ‘primitive’ tent sites are mostly river front pitches on the banks of the Mississippi, and my 62+ senior’s discount saved $3 at $14 for the night.
So, Illinois has finally come good with what promises to be an exceptional trail. It’s just a shame nothing can be done about the mosquitoes and biting flies.
